Gurney Norman graduated from the University of Kentucky and attended Stanford University as a Wallace Stegner Creative Writing Fellow.

- Maxine.
He is an authority on the literary and cultural history of the Appalachian Region. He lectures frequently in the Region and enjoys visiting elementary, middle and high schools to teach writing workshops.
