Why Study Appalachia?

The minor in Appalachian Studies is designed for students with a serious interest in the Appalachian Region. Through the program, students are enabled to more fully comprehend the diverse histories social structures and cultures of the region.

In addition to coursework under the Appalachian Studies heading, students select additional supporting coursework from the areas of sociology, history, music, English, geography, and political science.

A degree in Appalachian Studies prepares students for graduate education as well as preparation to work in a variety of professions which include, communication, education, environment, humanities, government, hospitality, marketing, public service, research, science, and much more.

What are the backgrounds and qualifications of Appalachian Studies Faculty?
Courses are led by many notable scholars, and the university’s program in Appalachian Studies has been ranked as one of the best in its field.

Faculty include the editor and book review editor of the Journal of Appalachian Studies, a former Whisman Scholar at the Appalachian Regional Commission, the former Program and Program Chair of the Appalachian Studies Association, and authors of award-winning books in the field of Appalachian Studies. In a recent survey of Appalachian Studies scholars, UK was ranked as the best scholarly program in this interdisciplinary field.

Can I get a major in Appalachian Studies?

Yes. A student interested in pursuing a Topical Major in Appalachian Studies needs to first find an Appalachian Studies affiliated faculty member who will serve as her/his Topical Major Advisor. Under the guidance of the Topical Major Advisor, each student must write a proposal for a course of study, which must be approved by the Topical Major Advisor and the Undergraduate Committee.
