Consider how many e-mails arrive in your inbox everyday that have some sort of quote or slogan at the bottom.  One of my personal favorites is the old saw from Margaret Mead—“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

In 2007 the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching awarded the University of Kentucky the designation of “Engaged University” for its outreach and partnership activities.

"Children of the Mountains" student and faculty reactions

Response to 20/20’s program on February 13, “A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains,” was immediate and varied.  The UK Appalachian Center received numerous calls and e-mails  following the program, voicing concern, suggestions, frustration and shock.

Some say it is the key to our energy future in a carbon-constrained world, while others denounce it as an oxymoron.  Whatever one’s perspective, “clean coal” has become a lightning rod for debates about sustainable energy production and its use in the United States and beyond.
