Appalachian Kentucky Bridges to Success

Kentucky has set a goal of increasing the educational attainment level of the Commonwealth to the national average by 2020, and to do this Kentucky needs to double the number of baccalaureate degree holders over the next] 4 years, from roughly 400,000 in 2000 to nearly 800,000 by 2020, This goal is especially daunting for educational institutions serving the eastern (Appalachian) region of Kentucky.

Kentucky Asthma Management Program

Kentucky has the highest rate of lung disease in the U.S., including childhood asthma, with the highest rates in Eastern Kentucky. This problem is complicated by the highest smoking rates in the country, high poverty rates, poorly educated citizens, physician shortages, high obesity rates, and pre-conceived biases of local residents. This significantly impacts the lives of children in the area, resulting in an increased morbidity and mortality, missed school for children, and missed work for parents.
